Introduction:

The A.P.A.E was established in 1978 by Mitsuharu Tsuchiya and a group of Conventional Medicine Doctors to teach and promote Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine amongst the class of medical doctors in Portugal. Above all its principal objective has been to foster a new type of medicine that integrates Oriental Medicine and Ocidental Medicine. The first of its kind in Europe, the association benefits from a modest membership of nearly 100 certified practitioners, researchers and medical doctors.

The A.P.A.E. was officially accepted as a W.F.A.S. member in the 4th of December 1990, representing Portugal in the world arena. Its main activities include the exchange of academic and professional knowledge between Portugal and Japan, the organization of national Acupuncture symposiums and the participation in International Acupuncture Conferences representing Portugal. Furthermore, the A.P.A.E. has been involved in the publication of research papers at the national level. Its current and primary focus will be to continue the promotion of genuine and safe Acupuncture practice in Portugal, with special focus in teaching MDs and furthering research.

A.P.A.E. ACTIVITIES

As pioneers in Portugal, the A.P.A.E. has actively promoted the introduction of efficient, genuine and safe Acupuncture ever since its establishment in 1978 with the coming of Mitsuharu Tsuchiya to Portugal.

The association benefited from its exclusive partnerships and alliances with some local Medical Groups and influential institutions from Japan ( such as Meiji University of Oriental Medicine, Tsukuba Technology of Acupuncture University and Kansai College of Oriental Medicine ).
This allowed the A.P.A.E. to offer an innovative perspective into Oriental Medicine and build on its academic understanding. Most recently, the APAE has given a breakthrough step by signing a protocol with Meiji University of Oriental Medicine (Japan).

Its activities include:

• Theoretical and practical Acupuncture lessons to MDs
• Organisation of national symposiums of Acupuncture
• Setting the research agenda for A.P.A.E. members and affiliated research groups
• Publication of symposium summaries and research compilations
• Exchanging academic and practical knowledge with international counterparts
• Actively promoting W.F.A.S. objectives in Portugal.

The next steps for the A.P.A.E. is to extend its experience and philosophy throughout Portugal and the rest of Europe, strengthening ties with its Chinese and Japanese counterparts.
